Successfulness of the project.

The only major problem I had throughout my project was changing the overall idea to accommodate an interview/voice-over instead of an acting interview like I planned in my research/idea page. The project did regrettably take a while to come together this was due to me shooting slightly late but thankfully not too late. For example in my last project, the shooting happened absurdly late and thus gave me no time to edit or create any kind of narrative. This time I improved greatly being able to finish shooting and still have plenty of time to edit was a huge relief and ultimately saved my project.

The other main issues with my project came in the production stage. To keep it simple and explain I found it hard to film in my chosen location, although I knew everyone there and had an idea of all the footage that I wanted to capture as soon as you put a camera on someone they change completely. As most people didn't want to be on camera despite how hard I protested most of my shots are close-ups, in my research, this is something I wanted as it's a food documentary however a couple more wide shots would have really balanced this footage out and made it much easier on the eye and improved it overall. Whatever my next project is it's essential to use a large different number of shot types. Even if you don't think some of these will work having them in post-production gives you much more of a creative choice and ability to balance your work out.

With my production, the only other real issue was the interview. As my idea changed and developed I didn't expect the interview to be great and it didn't turn out as nice as I wanted. The audio level was to low and unfortunately, the interview itself was slightly dry with the answers not being great. Learning from this has helped me understand interviews further. Make sure you record in the right places, my car was not the best location however I didn't have much choice so ultimately this has taught me to plan more and make sure you have backup locations. For future interviews I think going back to the more professional face to face type would be a far better idea. It gives you so much more control of audio and visuals and actually allows you to see who's talking in a light you want to portray.

My project met my target audience criteria. I think it fits well into the age category but was realistically okay for anyone to watch. It provided the necessary information that I wanted to convey to the audience. When watching it almost everyone learns something new and this is the key point in a documentary, letting your target audience learn something new.

Research that developed the idea.

Naturally, my research hugely influenced my idea. Especially on this project as I had never created a documentary on this topic or really looked into a lot of food video/documentaries. Firstly my research into the modes and conventions of the documentary really helped me select a chosen mode and understand all types of documentaries further.

My further research into two documentaries related to my subject aided to the development of the different micro-elements such as cinematography and editing in my doc. When you watch you can see just much of my documentary is influenced by this. The opening sequence quick montage of shots, for example, both of the food documentaries I researched included this, the constant close-ups again a common theme between the two and if it had worked out the interviews.

Analysing my primary research the interview was good but the feedback and pointers I made for myself I didn't really act on. Something I definitely need to have a look at the next project. The focus group was okay and provided some feedback however as the members didn't know much about the chosen subject I need to think carefully about my selection in the future.

I had some good interview feedback which would have likely helped if I had conducted a proper setup interview.

Planning/Idea Development

Overall I'm happy with how my project was planned. All planning forms and interview questions were completed and to a good standard. A good risk assessment was carried out as I would be filming in a potentially very dangerous area. When my idea changed obviously a lot of this planning was compromised however I think for this project again unlike the advert project I adjusted well.

It feels like in the majority of projects my idea changes for some reason and it was the same case here. It was dealt with better in this case however for my next project definitely needs to be adapted and improved. Trying to stick to my idea and not adapting obviously, in this case, I had to however it's happened a lot.

I learned so many different media skills and techniques in this project, it's the most amount of footage I've ever had and editing it down was a completely different process to most other projects. Using different types of equipment such as the zoom mic, canon 5D camera and creating time-lapses using slow-mo and editing it all together on Adobe Premiere Pro.

Overall I am rather happy with how this project turned out in the end. I ended up with a finished documentary on pizza hut which lasted 4.20 and met the necessary criteria. Although my idea did evolve and change throughout the project the premise of an interview and the different cinematography that I wanted to capture remained the same. My chosen choice of music and archival footage worked well with the project and almost everything audio and visual blended nicely through my use of editing.

I think in the future I need documenting my project as it's happening. Reviewing my blog, footage and overall progress while I'm working. Focus on planning my project essentially every sheet to completed by a certain date and set myself personal goals. I did have the production sheet however didn't stick to it as well as I would have liked to.
